Support Policy for Oracle Software in Microsoft Azure

Microsoft Corporation (“Microsoft”) provides support for certain Oracle products that are pre-installed in virtual machine images that it publishes and licenses through Microsoft Azure (“License-Included Images”). If requested by a customer, such support can include access to patches and updates for License-Included Images.
Microsoft does not provide support for any other use of Oracle products in Azure, including Oracle software pre-installed in virtual machine images that do not include licenses to the Oracle software (“Bring-Your-Own-License (BYOL) Images”) or Oracle software installed by customers within Azure virtual machines (“VMs”). You may be able to receive support from Oracle for BYOL Images or other Oracle software for which you have obtained a license from Oracle. Check with Oracle for availability.
Microsoft publishes License-Included Images corresponding to various combinations of Oracle Database, Oracle WebLogic, and Oracle Java Development Kit (JDK) (see full list of images here). Currently, all License-Included Images provided by Microsoft include Windows Server as the underlying operating system. License-Included Images that include Linux are not offered at this time. See deployment instructions and additional information for License-Included Images.
Microsoft provides support for License-Included Images through Microsoft Azure Technical Support. Support for License-Included Images is available only for customers who have purchased a support plan for Microsoft Azure. To request technical support for License-Included Images, open a service request via the Microsoft Azure Management Portal or other appropriate support channels. If you have not purchased a Microsoft Azure support agreement, community support is available through the Oracle on Microsoft Azure MSDN forum.
Support is offered on a "commercially reasonable effort" basis at all support levels. If it is determined that the Oracle software caused the problem, Microsoft may engage with Oracle to resolve the problem but will be reliant upon Oracle to provide any fix. Microsoft may provide support through one or more subcontractors.
When you run an Azure VM deployed from a License-Included Image, you will be billed for two separate items: the cost of running a Windows Server Azure VM and the cost of a license to any Oracle software installed and licensed as part of the image. The cost of running the Windows Server VM will depend on the size of the VM, and the cost of the license will depend on the combination of Oracle software products installed and licensed as part of the image. You do not need to purchase any additional licenses for the specific Oracle software products installed and licensed as part of any License-Included Image.
Support for Oracle software installed and licensed as part of License-Included Images corresponds to Oracle’s support lifecycle.
You should check for Windows Server and Oracle software updates immediately after deploying a new VM from a License-Included Image, since new patches may have become available after the image was created. Microsoft Azure technical support can provide you with access to Oracle updates and patches so that you can patch your VMs. The Oracle software patches provided by Microsoft are for use only in Azure VMs deployed from License-Included Images and are licensed under the same terms as the Oracle software in the images. To install Windows Server updates in Azure VMs, use Windows Update.
Support Exceptions for License-Included Images
Support for License-Included Images does not include assistance with the design or development of applications based on Oracle software.
Note: Due to the design of the Oracle software installer, License-Included Images may include additional Oracle software features that are not covered by the Microsoft licenses associated with the images. Running VMs from License-Included Images does not entitle you to licenses or support from Microsoft for any of these additional features except where they are listed as separately licensed features in the image description on the Azure portal. Only the standard features of Oracle Database, Oracle WebLogic, and Oracle Java Development Kit (JDK) (plus any additional features listed as separately licensed features, if any) are licensed and supported as part of License-Included Images. If you desire to install or use any additional Oracle software features that are not licensed as part of License-Included Images, please refer to your Oracle licensing agreement to determine whether this is permitted and how many licenses might be required.
Some common additional options for Oracle products are compatible with Azure and are supported by Oracle in BYOL deployments, but are not supported by Microsoft for use in VMs deployed from License-Included Images unless listed as separately licensed features. Note: High Availability and Disaster Recovery features are included in Oracle Data Guard, which is licensed and supported for License-Included Images that include Oracle Database Enterprise Edition.
Support Availability and Local Language Support
Support for License-Included Images is available in all markets in which License-Included Images are offered. While Azure support is provided in numerous local languages, as identified on the Azure Support Plans web page, support for Oracle software in Azure is currently offered only in English.
Bring Your Own License (BYOL) Scenarios
BYOL scenarios include both BYOL Images where Oracle software is pre-installed on virtual machine images that do not include licenses to the Oracle software and Oracle software installed directly by customers on Azure VMs. Oracle maintains a list of Oracle products supported by Oracle to run on Azure.
Note: Support is available from Microsoft only for License-Included Images. Microsoft does not provide support for any BYOL use of Oracle products in Azure.
To request technical support for use of Oracle software on Azure in BYOL scenarios, contact Oracle technical support via the My Oracle Support webpage or other appropriate Oracle support channels under your existing Oracle support agreement, as per Oracle’s support policy for using Oracle products in the cloud.
In BYOL scenarios, you purchase licenses and support for Oracle software from Oracle or an Oracle software reseller. You pay Microsoft only for the cost of running a Windows Server or Linux VM, whether you deploy the VM from a BYOL Image or install the Oracle software on the VM yourself. Do not install Oracle software on a VM deployed from a License-Included Image in which the Oracle software was pre-installed, or you will be charged for obtaining a license to the software, as described above, even though you already own a license.
Make sure you are running versions of Oracle software that are currently supported within Oracle’s support lifecycle. Refer to the documentation on Oracle’s support website and blogs for more lifecycle management information or contact Oracle.
To access software patches to be used in BYOL scenarios, or for patches for Oracle software products used outside of Azure, contact Oracle support. To install Windows Server operating system updates on Azure VMs, use Windows Update. For updates to Oracle Linux, refer to the Oracle Linux support program. For updates to other versions of Linux, contact your provider.
Compatibility Exceptions for Oracle Software on Azure
Some features of Oracle software products are currently not compatible with Microsoft Azure in either BYOL or License-Included scenarios due to technical limitations.
